Scotland is world renowend as the home of
golf, and although the exact origins of the game are much debated, it is
without question that its roots are planted firmly in Scottish soil. It
was the Scots who created the structures of the game as we know it today
- the designing and making of golf clubs, the founding of rules and the
establishing of early societies. No country in the world offers better
golfing facilities than Scotland. We are very fortunate to have so
many wonderful courses near us that I would find it impossible to list them
all. I have made a small list of the courses which are within one
hour's journey from the Foresters House. The courses vary from small
friendly island courses with magnificent views to very old traditional championship
links. Visitors are made welcome at most courses and very often clubs
will offer an economical package to golfers which include meals, transport
etc. Sometimes playing times are restricted so you are best to book
your times in advance. No two courses are the same and no two golfers
look for the same things in a golf course. The choice is yours...

Ancestors in Renfrewshire |
|
Many Scots
left home in the great waves of emigration caused by the Highland
clearances, but most prospered and a few even found immortality waiting
on the other side of the ocean - for example, Alexander Graham Bell.
If you are interested in genealogy, Renfrewshire is where records
still exist for many of our famous 'exports' to America, Canada, Australia
and elsewhere round the globe. It may take some digging to find
out where your Scottish forebears came from, but some of our visitors
say that's half the fun.
For a start, we suggest: James Watt Library, Union Street, Greenock.

Librarian Lesley Couperwhite has pulled together the best archive
in the West of Scotland, including the complete census for Renfrewhisre
(1841-91), parish records, names indexes for Inverclyde, and much
more - plus a record of local births, deaths and marriages between
victims of the cholera epidemics of 1832 & 1849, etc - a real
rarity. While staying in Renfrewshire you can also trace your
ancestors by contacting Mr Graeme Mackenzie at The MacMillan Clan
Centre Finlaystone, Langbank, Renfrewshire. |
